A new style of university was born in the Dominican Republic with the creation of the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra. The first private university in the country was founded in 1962 in Santiago de los Caballeros, located in the Caribbean, in Hispaniola, island of beginnings. Then ruled the Church Pope John XXIII, and the new university was named after his encyclical letter to humanity: “Mother and Teacher”. Later, it extended to the touristic city of Puerto Plata and to Santo Domingo, the oldest city in the Americas. In 1987, in celebration of its Silver Jubilee,Pope John Paul II elevated it to the category of Pontifical. As a Catholic University, immersed the community, performing a bringing education and services to underserved or excluded national sectors; and, on the other hand, complementing the training process that begins in the classroom. in society, the “Madre y Maestra” projects itself towards dual function: on one hand, assisting, counseling,

PUCMM is centrally located in both its botanical-garden-like campus at kilometer 1.5 of Duarte’s freeway in Santiago de los Caballeros and in its urban styled campus at Lincoln Ave. and Bolivar Street in Santo Domingo. Campus in Santiago is an icon of the city. It occupies 950,002 meters and it is an ecological lung of the region and a beautiful garden –campus that invites to study and to investigate. It was designed to preserve the topography and the original beauty of the landscape and, at the same time, to create an appropriate environment to the development of academic and spiritual life of the students, teachers and other members of the university. PUCMM has two campuses, one in the capital city of Santo Domingo and the other in the northern city of Santiago de los Caballeros. On its campuses the University offers over 100 careers and undergraduate and graduate programs, distributed into four major faculties:

Since its inception, in addition to teaching, research has been one of the top priorities of the Madre y Maestra. The Institution encourages its students and teachers to search for new knowledge and apply it to the various areas of science and technology. It also has several research centers and specialized programs in the areas of education, psychology, neuroscience, health, nanosciences, material sciences, electronic engineering, environment, economy, higher education, sociopolitics, and technology, among others. In addition, the institution dedicates specialized funds so that its professors may conduct research in different professional areas.

Throughout the duration of their studies, PUCMM students cultivate the relationship between mind and body, coexistence, mutual respect, and ethical and religious values. Student associations, university pastoral groups, sports teams, Folklore groups, theater, student band, and choir, are offered as extracurricular activities through the Deanship of Students are opportunities for personal growth and for the discovery of talent, while enlivening university life.

Our Academic Orientation Department offers our students a variety of academic and mental health programs. These programs provide psychological support to any student undergoing low academic performance or personal issues that may require onsite assistance or external referrals. In addition, a medical health clinic provides medical consultation, care, and medicine at any time a student may need this physical health assistance. At PUCMM, we avail our students with a large database of books and academic consulting material both in our website and through our Library System. Through our website, our students can directly access their academic status, details on their subjects, knowledge about their curriculum, check on their academic index, contact their teacher, interact with assignments, and other academic tools. There is also access to any tutorials programmed by their teachers outside of the class time.

We also offer academic writing support to our students, through our specialized writing and reading center dedicated to help students with these skills: The Center for the Excellence of the Research and Dissemination of Reading and Writing (CEDILE, as per its initials in Spanish) helps our students to understand and produce writing as a progressive, recursive process. In every career student have a space to practice their knowledge and some of them are open to the public, like dental care services from stomatology students that have their own clinic for practicing. Another service is the restaurant project created by Tourism and gastronomy students once a year, that is open to public.


To invest in quality education is to make an investment for life. The Educational Loan Program at PUCMM guarantees access to education for those students who have talent but do not have the financial means. One out of the students benefit from this program, to which the University dedicates significant resources of its own budget each year.


More than 87,249 Alumni represent the foundation of the trust that Dominican society has placed in the Institution. These alumni are an integral part of the development process of the Dominican Republic or are successful professionals abroad. They stand out due to their performance in the science, social and economic fields and they constitute the main pride of the university. According to statistics from the postgraduate department, 90% of our students find jobs between one to six months after their graduate. The Madre y Maestra maintains relations with various agencies, educational institutions, governments and the public and private sectors, both domestic and outside its borders, which contribute significantly to the development of its programs. Within that context, the institution welcomes students from around the world, and their students participate in programs at all levels, in universities in the United States, Canada, Europe and Latin America, with which it maintains collaboration agreements.


One feature that distinguishes the Madre y Maestra is its facilities and the beauty of its campuses, located in the heart of the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, and in the metropolitan area of Santo Domingo. Both campuses, in a constant process of growth, boast modern buildings and facilities integrated into a natural environment that fosters study, research and the cultivation of the spirit. Our main campus is equipped with a gym, two banks, ATMs, an Olympic-size pool, a football field, a running track, tennis courts, a baseball field, and a basketball court. In Santo Domingo, a recently constructed building accommodates the faculties of Health Sciences and Sciences and Engineering. It is an intelligent building designed to save energy and to take care of the environment that counts with 39 labs that respond to ultimate technology.
